Before working as a speech therapist, I worked as a medical researcher. I worked at the Queensland Brain Institute and Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. I am currently undertaking a PhD project at The University of Queensland (UQ). This PhD project examines current clinical practices for children with traumatic brain injuries.

As a paediatric speech pathologist, I work with children exclusively. I have experience working with infants through to late-stage teens in a wide-variety of areas – speech clarity, complex communication and disability, reading and writing, stuttering, language impairments and social communication.

Kids’ Speech Therapy in Lower Eyre Peninsula

Speech Clinic Lower Eyre Peninsula provides speech therapy across their childhood and teenage years who live in the Lower Eyre Peninsula area. We advocate for early intervention. It’s critically important to recognise signs of potential speech, language, literacy or social difficulties, as this helps us to reduce future impacts on social and academic success.

They’ll grow out of it, right?
We’re always asked, “when is the best age to start speech therapy?”. As soon as possible is always best. Speech Therapists can complete assessments and provide treatment to children from 16 months to 18 years old. There is strong evidence supporting early intervention. When a speech therapist can support a child from birth until 4-5 years old, they can reduce the long-term impacts of a communication or language disorder. This gives our children the best chance to be ready for school. Sometimes speech, language, literacy, fluency and social interaction difficulties can become noticeable throughout a child’s schooling years. We love to support school-aged children and adolescents to reach their academic and social potential.

An Introduction to DiRFloortime®

By understanding a child’s unique individual differences, appreciating their unique developmental stage and what sparks their joy and interest, we can follow their lead to support their language, cognitive and socio-emotional growth. We recently had the opportunity to engage in PD with DiR-experts travelling from the United States. As we are strong advocates for relationship-based intervention, especially for children presenting with complex communication profiles and social interaction challenges, we loved…

Higher Level Language Development

With April Fool’s Day just passing, it’s hard for speech pathologists to not think about the significance of humour. While many people do not necessarily realise, humour is actually a skill that draws upon many language areas. As a result, many children that present with language delays and disorders can have a significant difficulty both understanding and using humour with their peers - and this is essentially because many areas…
