Hello, I’m Lauren the Founder of Speech Clinic, a Speech Therapist based in Brisbane.

Before working within speech pathology, I studied and worked within the medical research field where I developed a passion for research and evidence-based practice. I work exclusively with children as a paediatric clinician. I have experience working with young toddlers through to late-stage teens in a variety of areas – speech clarity, language impairments, complex communication and disability, reading and writing, stuttering and social communication.

Journal Standing

Frontiers in Neuroscience is a peer-reviewed journal that has an impact of 3.566. ‘ADAR3 is involved in learning and memory in mice’. Our article was published in a journal at the forefront of the neuroscience field.

Short Description

This publication was instrumental in demonstrating that mice without exon 3 of Adar3 present with increased amounts of anxiety and reductions in hippocampus-dependent short-and long-term memory formation. RNA sequencing also demonstrated a dysregulation of genes implicated in synaptic function in the hippocampus of ADAR 3-deficient mice. This publication is also the first to show that ADAR3 transiently translocates from the cytoplasm to the nucleus following KCL-mediated activation in SH-SY5Y cells. Such results support ADAR 3’s contributions toward cognitive processing in mammals and further supports earlier in vitro studies that suggest that ADAR3 acts as a negative regulator of A-I RNA editing. At a larger scale, this paper further contributes to the current body of work investigating, (1) the amount of regulatory RNA encoded in the genome; (2) the proportion of RNA editing by adenosine to inosine (A-I) post-transcriptional editing; and (3) the relationship to developmental complexity and cognitive evolution in animals.

‘A cross-over single case study of the neural underpinnings of anodal-tDCS in post-stroke aphasia’

Project Scope

This project aimed to highlight the need for novel approaches to be used in conjunction with traditional behavioural methods to increase therapeutic efficiency in post-stroke aphasia.

Experimental Methodologies and Data Collection

This honours project employed a single-subject, cross-over, sham-tDCS controlled study in conjunction with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).


‘Characterising the features and function of ADAR3 in human neurons’

This project aimed to characterise ADAR3 in human cortical neurons and thereby contribute new knowledge toward our current understanding of A-I post-transcriptional editing and its impact upon complex human disease.

My project contributed critical insight into the unique features and proposed roles of ADAR3, namely its sub-cellular differential location profile following depolarisation, expression profile in the human body and expression profile during neuronal differentiation.
